This month: keep the cash

NO TRADE. The model account starts with AUD 5,000 in settled cash. We have not bought an option, converted currency or earned an investment return. This is the first public observation, not a reconstructed history.

The launch is dated 16 October 2026 in Australia (the evening of 15 October in New York). US regular trading is closed. More importantly, no authenticated, timestamped option chain was available for this decision. A directionally persuasive story does not establish that an option is worth its premium. Cash wins this month because we cannot verify the price of the risk.

What we can establish

Observed monetary-policy backdrop. On 16 September, the Federal Reserve raised its target range by 0.25 percentage points to 3.75–4.00%. The statement describes resilient activity alongside elevated inflation. The next scheduled FOMC meeting is 27–28 October 2026. Those are observed policy and calendar facts, not forecasts of the next decision. Federal Reserve statement · FOMC calendar.

The BLS calendar lists September import/export prices for 16 October at 08:30 Eastern, and the Employment Cost Index for 30 October at 08:30 Eastern. The September CPI release was scheduled for 14 October; we do not substitute its schedule for verified economic results. An options thesis spanning the next two months must survive macro surprises, rather than depend on one release. BLS October calendar.

Volatility context, not a trading quote. Cboe's public page reports VIX 16.46, dated 15 October 2026. Its market-data section indicates a delay of at least 20 minutes. The displayed clock lacks a verified timezone, so we preserve the date and mark the exact quote timestamp as unavailable. This cannot validate an executable SPY option price. VIX measures a different option basket and maturity from any individual proposed contract. Cboe VIX.

Currency context. The RBA table shows USD 0.6955 per AUD for 15 October 2026. The page gives a reference date, not an executable FX quote timestamp. At that reference rate, AUD 5,000 is arithmetically USD 3,477.50 before conversion costs. With the model's estimated 0.5% conversion cost it would be USD 3,460.11, rounded to cents. No conversion occurred. A trade needs a dated broker FX observation; the reference rate is not used to book a transaction. RBA exchange rates.

Three candidates, one decision

These are research candidates, not orders or implied recommendations. No strike or expiry has been selected without a chain.

Candidate Plausible structure and timeframe Why it did not beat cash
SPY · broad US equities Purchased call, 60–90 days to expiry, with a roughly one-month intended hold. A continuation thesis would require price above its 20- and 60-session means with participation. Strongest research alternative: broader exposure reduces dependence on one issuer. But verified trend, volume, realised volatility and option premium are absent. We cannot establish whether a call offers value over shares.
QQQ · Nasdaq-100 Purchased call, 60–90 days, if growth-led momentum survives higher discount rates. A more concentrated growth exposure needs stronger evidence than a bullish narrative. Its option premium could already price the anticipated move; we have no verified IV, skew or liquidity advantage over SPY.
TLT · long US Treasuries Purchased put, 60–90 days, if rising long yields persist; this is a conditional thesis, not a yield forecast. The September policy move is known information. Long yields can fall despite a policy-rate rise. Duration exposure creates a plausible alternative, but the thesis can reverse on weaker growth and we lack an executable premium.

SPY seeks S&P 500 exposure; QQQ tracks the Nasdaq-100; TLT provides exposure to US Treasury bonds with more than 20 years remaining maturity. Current constituent weights, sector weights and portfolio duration have not been independently captured in a decision-grade snapshot. We do not claim specific exposures beyond these issuer descriptions. SPY issuer · QQQ issuer · TLT issuer.

What is missing, and why it matters

We do not infer a statistical edge from delta, a possible large payoff, the policy statement or a prospective high win rate. No probability-of-profit or expected-value number is published.

Ticker, OCC identifier, buy/sell legs, strike, expiry, multiplier, entry bid/ask, limit, walk-away price, maximum option payoff and expiry breakeven are not applicable because no position is recommended. Quote timestamp: unavailable. Publication and source-retrieval times are shown separately above and below; neither is an option quote timestamp.

Underlying move at a hypothetical expiry Model account P&L from this decision
−10% AUD 0 — no position
−5% AUD 0 — no position
Unchanged AUD 0 — no position
+5% AUD 0 — no position
+10% AUD 0 — no position

These are deterministic cash-only outcomes under the model's zero-interest convention. They are not option payoff simulations or pre-expiry option valuations. Purchased options can lose their entire premium. Time decay and lower implied volatility can reduce a long option's value even if the underlying moves in the expected direction; their effects cannot be quantified here without a contract and a valuation model.

The strongest opposing case

Remaining in cash can miss a sustained rally or a profitable rate-driven move. AUD cash also gives up potential USD gains if the Australian dollar weakens. That opportunity cost is real, but it does not establish an options edge at an unknown price. The decision would change only after verified liquid contracts, affordable whole-contract sizing, an independently reviewed thesis and current FX pass the publication checks.

Entry and management discipline

This issue has no entry window and no standing order. Supplying data does not retroactively convert this NO TRADE into a fill. A timestamped management/recommendation addition is required for any later proposal; its entry clock starts after that publication. A regular future recommendation expires after two US trading sessions if unfilled.

The implementation permits purchased standard options only. It rejects short legs because a small unlevered account cannot assume it can finance early assignment or share delivery. If debit spreads are added later, they must use one combination order and an explicit, funded assignment policy; the payoff cap alone is insufficient protection.

Future long options must be closed at least five exchange sessions before expiry, and before the next recommendation can enter. No exercise or share purchase is assumed. On a missing closing quote or corporate-action exception, the position stays visible as unresolved and blocks another trade. Stops are instructions evaluated at captured observations, not guaranteed loss limits. See the methodology.

Previous recommendation

There is no previous recommendation and no completed trade. Realised P&L is AUD 0; unrealised P&L is AUD 0 because there is no open position. Win rate is not applicable. The first account-equity observation is AUD 5,000. No backtests appear in the forward record.

Supplying the missing evidence

The operator can set a server-side TRADIER_TOKEN for read-only production market data, run python scripts/note.py fetch, and supply independently dated open interest and broker FX through the documented broker JSON import. Tradier's documented chain response does not establish an open-interest as-of date; the adapter deliberately does not invent it. Sandbox quotes are delayed and cannot trigger entries. Tradier chain API · Tradier data timing.

A current research packet must compare three candidates, include dated event/ex-dividend evidence and explain the edge. The pipeline rechecks quotes immediately before generating a trade issue. It buys at the observed ask only after publication and only within the published limit. The README provides exact import fields and commands. This edition is frozen; subsequent evidence is appended to the record.
